Buffalo, NY- Bankers' Association of Buffalo $5,000 Certificate of Deposit Nov. 6, 1893 Shafer-Sheehan NY3000-5000 PMG Very Fine 20.
Issued near the beginning of the Panic of 1893, this certificate of deposit with serial number 17 evidenced a deposit of $5,000 in gold coin by one of the member banks of the Bankers' Association of Buffalo (in this case, the City Bank). The $5,000 denomination appears in a gold colored guilloche at left on the face. The certificate is rubberstamped and roulette-cancelled as PAID. Pinholes are observed with many located at far left. A seldom seen artifact from one of the nation's most serious Depressions of the 19th century.
