Description

Perth Amboy, NJ- Commercial Bank of New Jersey $5 Sep. 1, 1856 G44b Wait 1971 PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ.
The bank opened in 1823 and remained in business until 1851 when it failed. The bank reportedly paid its creditors by 1856 and reopened in October only to fail again in April 1857. The $5 note is from this second brief period of operation and is always popular with collectors due to its detailed and graphic vignette of a whale being hunted by a crew in a small open boat. The nautical theme is continued by a vignette of a sailing vessel at left and a sailor at right. Two red 5 protectors complete the design. The fully issued note is well printed on bright paper and is fully framed.
