Description

Dover, NH- Langdon Bank $1 Jan. 1, 1862 G2b PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30 PPQ.
The Langdon bank was chartered by the state legislature on July 15, 1854 and opened at the beginning of the following year. The bank, by the 1860s, had a history of a balance sheet that was increasingly burdened with questionable loans that at one time equaled more than half of the bank's capital. The bank survived long enough to be succeeded by the Dover National Bank in late April, 1865. The $1 design is quite appealing, with a large vignette of a cherub rolling an 1854 silver dollar along with a train and town in the distance accompanied by a large vignette of Fame and Liberty. The note has a large red ONE protector. With several sources concurring that there are not more than perhaps 2-4 $1 notes extant, this high condition example should attract bidding attention from both New Hampshire and general obsolete paper money collectors who appreciate great rarity and style.
