Description

Nemaha City, NE (Territory)- C.E.L. Holmes $3 Post Note 185_ Walton-3 Remainder PMG Uncirculated 62.
Holmes operated the second sawmill of Nemaha City. This mill opened sometime during the 1858-59 period. Only $1,000 worth of notes were produced at Holmes' direction in denominations of $1, $2, $3, and $5, but no records have been discovered indicating that any of this amount was signed and issued for use. Our current offering, printed by Furnas & Langdon of Brownville, features an allegorical winged female at upper left and a large red THREE overprint at lower center. A steam locomotive at lower right and a dog's head at bottom center are also observed. We last auctioned this exact representative in January 2024 for $630. PMG mentions a tear at upper left by the head of the allegorical female as well as evidence of a previous mounting.
