Description

Danbury, CT- Wooster House Prize Estate and Cash Fund $2 Feb. 1872 Very Good;
New York, NY- Mt. Florence Prize Estate and Cash Fund $1 Jan. 1872 Fine-Very Fine.
Both of these notes are examples of a popular fraud that was making the rounds in the 1870s. The notes allegedly represented shares in a pool of claims on a property / estate. At a promised future meeting of ticket or shareholders, a committee was then to be convened to determine how the assets would divided among "shareholders" who had paid $1 or $2 for a fractional interest. The Wooster House note is more straight forward, explaining that what would happen was essentially a lottery drawing while the Mt. Florence note is more obscure in explaining just exactly how the proceeds would be divided. The promised meetings, of course, never occurred.
The Wooster House $2 is quite soiled with minor edge roughness while the Mt. Florence $1 has two edge tears in the upper right margin and some stains. (Total: 2 notes)
