Description
St. Louis, MO- M. Mayer-Scrap Iron and Old Metals $4 Advertising Note ND (ca. 1880s) Vlack UNL Fine.It appears that the St. Louis Mayer family was involved in a number of businesses related to scrap materials and, for lack of a better term, "junk" between the mid-1860s and early 1900s. This issue is not an issue of the more commonly seen issuer, Abraham B. Mayer, who dealt in Buffalo Bones, horns, hoofs, rags, scrap iron "& c. & c." but rather of Moritz (sometimes spelled Morris) Mayer who starts appearing in St. Louis directories in the mid-1880s to 1900s conducting a very similar business from a completely different address. It is assumed that both issuers were related and members of the same extended family. Additional research may eventually sort out what appear to be rather complex family relationships. The host note for this advertising piece is an unissued $4 Civil War era Missouri Defence Bond, that had been intended for issue by the state's secessionist government. The back contains an ad for the business depicting what appears to be two boys playing pitch and catch, with the "catcher" getting hit in the nose after botching the catch. There is some suggestion that these are caricatures of African-American children, but it is also possible that these are silhouette style views of children simply printed in the same color as the rest of the ad. Your cataloger believes that this note, once part of the Eric P. Newman Collection, is many times rarer than the frequently seen A.B. Mayer issues. We have never offered a different example from this issuer.
