Description
Natchez, MS- Planters Bank of the State of Mississippi $5 18__ as G180 Kraus 4060p Leggett 62 Proof PMG Choice Fine 15.The Planters Bank was chartered in 1830, with two thirds of the stock reserved for purchase by the state. Branches were authorized across the state in Columbus, Jackson, Manchester (Yazoo City), Monticello, Natchez, Port Gibson, Vicksburg, and Woodville. The bank remained in business during the Panic of 1837, but was severely weakened. The bank refused to allow the state bank commissioners to examine its books in 1839. The bank was forced into liquidation in early 1844, with the state repudiating the bonds that it had guaranteed which served as its investment in the bank. The $5 design features a vignette of Mercury soaring through the clouds strewing coins from a cornucopia flanked by two end panels containing the denomination in both text and numerals. The note is printed on India paper with four POCs in the signature lines and a number of small tape repairs of an internal and several edge splits / tears. This note served as the plate note in the Kraus Mississippi state catalog (page 90). This is the first example of this $5 design that we have been privileged to offer in any form.
