Description

Madisonville, MS- Madisonville & Pearl River Turnpike Co. $10 18__ G16 Kraus 29857p Leggett 16 Proof PMG Uncirculated 61.
The Madisonville & Pearl River Turnpike Company was incorporated on February 27, 1836, and its purpose was to build a road through the Pearl River swamp. Three short years later in 1839, however, the venture closed. This $10 features a female portrait at left, a family picking cotton at center, and a lovely depiction of a stag at right. Printed on India paper and mounted to cardstock with six punch cancels in the signature spaces, this is the first time we have auctioned a Proof of any denomination from this institution. The note has been miscut along the bottom edge.
