Description

Jackson, MS- State of Mississippi $5 "Back Proof" ND as on Cr. 64 PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
This is likely a Back Proof pulled by the St. Louis Bank Note Company for internal purposes as part of the preparation of Act of February 10, 1894 Special Auditor's Warrants by the company. The warrants were receivable for all dues to the state and paid no interest unless held to maturity on January 1, 1896 (in which case they earned 3%). Governor John M. Stone was arrested by Secret Service agents in July, 1894 on charges of counterfeiting because the warrants were judged to resemble federal issues. The charges were later dropped but Governor Stone recalled the incident as a "most outrageous proceeding." Well printed with minor mounting damage on the back of the card that has no impact on the note itself.
