Description

Grand Rapids, (MI)- J.W. Peirce 12-1/2¢ PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
John W. Peirce opened a bookstore in 1836 that eventually morphed into a dry goods business in the following decades. It is presumed that he remained in the dry goods business until his death in 1874. This note has a simple design with an end panel containing a vignette of a steamboat as well as two arm and hammer vignettes. Interestingly, Peirce added a manuscript "1/2" to the printed "12" denomination. PMG mentions pinholes which are of little consequence.
