Description
Boston, MA- Merchants' Bank $10 18__ G32 Proof PCGS Banknote Gem Unc 65 PPQ.Chartered in February 1828, this long lived bank worked closely with the Jackson administration during its campaign against the rechartering of the Second Bank of the United States and became one of the government's so-called "pet banks" for holding federal funds. On July 2, 1864, the Merchants National Bank of Boston, charter 475, succeeded this concern. The $10 offered here depicts Minerva holding a spear as she leans on a pillar at right, a variation of which was featured on the T33 Confederate Treasury Note of 1861. At upper left is a cameo like medallion bust of Minerva, and at center is a view of the Boston Custom House. This structure, completed in 1849, once served as the U.S. Customs Office. This Rawdon, Wright & Hatch production is printed on India paper mounted to cardstock with four punch cancels in the signature spaces. The cardstock contains the ghost image of a $5 note on the Northwestern Bank of Virginia at Wheeling (Haxby G10, Jones Littlefield BW30-21) on its back. We have not auctioned any representatives of this Merchants' Bank denomination and design in Proof form, though we did offer a $5 Proof from this series for $2,115 in April 2015 which was certified at the PCGS 67PPQ level. This piece is undoubtedly unique or nearly so in Proof form.
