Description

Bangor, ME - Exchange Bank
A fascinating affidavit, dated Jan. 11, 1859, regarding the circulation of a $5 note from this bank, which according to Haxby failed ca. 1856. It reads, "Wm. H. White being duly sworn doth depose and say that on or about the 9th day of November AD 1858 he received from the clerk of the Steam Boat Fred Lorenz a five Dollar note of the Exchange Bank of Bangor Maine which proves to be a broken Bank..." A fascinating legal document from the era of "broken" bank notes and steam boats that awakens nascent memories of Mark Twain, Mike Fink, and Diamond Lil. Very Fine with tape on the back and a resulting small stain on the front.
