Description

Monroe, LA- Vicksburg, Shreveport and Texas Railroad Company 50¢ Jan. 13, 1862 PMG Uncirculated 62.
The road was chartered in 1853 to connect northeast Texas to the Mississippi River. By January, 1861, the railroad had been completed from Vicksburg, MS to Monroe, LA with initial work completed on the route west of Shreveport to the Texas border. Confederate officials ironically took control of the railroad due to the suspected Union sympathies of management. In August 1863, the rolling stock and other assets were removed to Shreveport, with the entire line east of Monroe being virtually destroyed. The line west of Shreveport to Marshall, TX was usable by 1864. This note, which depicts Proserpina at left has three vignettes of trains (at center, in the left margin, and as part of a green underprint) and is printed on the back of an unused bond. PMG notes some minor ink erosion.
