Description

Columbus, IN- Kentucky Stock Bank $20 18__ G12a Wolka 0380-17 Remainder PMG Uncirculated 61.
The bank, whose circulation was originally secured by bonds of the State of Kentucky, was organized in 1854 and remained in business until voluntarily winding up its affairs as a note-issuing free bank in 1863. It continued in business as a private institution under the banner of McEwen & Sons Bank. This venture, however, did not end well, failing disastrously in 1871, with creditors receiving 6ยข on the dollar. The $20 design has but one portrait of a young woman and a small vignette of a very odd musical instrument, depending rather on a border of twenty small dies and counters, equal to the denomination. A striking brown-orange tint and large orange and white TWENTY protector complete the design. PMG notes some minor repairs in the top margin on the back. Very scarce and seldom offered.
