Description

La Grange, GA- La Grange Bank $1-$1-$1-$2 Jan. 4, 1855 as G2 x3 - as G4 Uncut Proof Sheet PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ;
La Grange, GA- La Grange Bank $1-$1-$1-$2 Backs Uncut Proof Sheet PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was chartered ca. 1854-55 and was soon characterized as a marginal, if not outright "wildcat," institution and by November 1861 was included on a list of closed / broken banks. These two uncut sheets make up the faces and backs of the bank's $1 and $2 notes, datelined Jan. 4, 1855. The $1 design features an eagle and shield vignette and a portrait of Washington, flanked by vignettes of a woman with a pail and a Native American mother and child. The $2 design features allegorical vignettes of Justice seated by a shield and another allegorical woman holding a balance scale seated in a large 2 flanked by a female portrait and a vignette of Hebe watering an eagle. The second sheet comprises the red-orange denominational backs for the same layout. Both sheets are printed on India paper mounted on cardstock which appear to have, in turn, been mounted to Danforth Wright archive book pages at one time. The Face Proofs each have six POCs in the signature lines while PMG notes that there is some "ink rub" on the uncut sheet of backs (faint images of printed designs from another sheet that was in contact with the sheet). These two sheets were part of Lot 282 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and likely are the only surviving examples in Proof form. (Total: 2 sheets)
