Union forces known as "Andrews Raiders" captured the Confederate locomotive known as the "General" on April 12, 1862. They made their escape on the tracks of the Western & Atlantic Rail Road. The "General" was later recaptured by the Confederates who gave chase with the engine "Texas" in what became known as the "Great Locomotive Chase." The "General" resides at the Kennesaw, GA museum and the "Texas" is on display at the Atlanta Cyclorama. Also, Wm. Grisham, who signed three of the four Western & Atlantic Rail Road notes as Superintendent, served as a clerk at the Dahlonega Mint during the years 1844-49. (Total: 6 notes)
