Description

1941 Massachusetts Banker's Stamp

St. Joseph, FL- Commercial Bank of Florida at Bank of the United States, Philadelphia $100 Post Note Jan. 14, 1840 G64 Benice 7 Remainder PMG Fine 12.
The St. Joseph branch was an unauthorized branch of the parent bank in Apalachicola. This $100 post note was payable at the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia. The choice of font size and type styles is interesting, emphasizing the Bank of the United States and deemphasizing the name of the issuing bank. At the time, the Bank of the United States was operating under a state charter from the state of Pennsylvania. This note has rust stains and is a remainder that has been falsely filled in, replete with a Nicholas Biddle presidential signature and a post-failure 1840 issue date. The design has vignettes of Ceres seated at center, an allegorical woman standing at left, representing perhaps Prosperity and/or Commerce at left, and a third of Ceres standing at right. The note has a rather amazing stamp on the back that indicates that this note was in commerce in May 1941. It is difficult to believe that this note would have been accepted a century later in Abington, MA, and so it is possible that the stamp was simply added by someone with too much time on his hands as a lark.
