Description

Washington, DC- Bank of the District of Columbia $10 Nov. 1, 1858 G10a PMG Very Fine 25.
The bank was one of the District's numerous fraudulent banks "in operation" for a short period of time in 1858. A notice appeared within 48 hours of the notes' appearance in circulation questioning the bank's legitimacy which prompted an equally strong worded defense to appear shortly thereafter. It appears that the bank was, in fact, a fraudulent enterprise. The design features a vignette of a farm family chatting with the local blacksmith flanked by an oval female portrait and an oval vignette of Justice seated. A dark red-orange overall tint and a large red-orange and white X protector complete the design.
