Description

New Haven, CT- Elm City Bank $3 Jan. 1, 1861 G6a PMG Good 6.
The bank was organized in 1855 and remained in business until 1864 when it was succeeded by the Second National Bank of New Haven. The design features a vignette of a farmer, sailor, and blacksmith "solving the world's problems" with a vignette of Liberty seated with Mercury and an allegorical woman at left. The American Bank Note Company New York imprint is not from THE ABNCo, but rather a name used by Jocelyn, Draper, Welsh & Co between 1854 and 1858. The note has a rarely seen solid dark yellow tint with reverse (white) THREE 3-THREE-3 protectors known as Seropyan's Patent. Christopher D. Seropyan from New Haven developed this special tint as an anti-counterfeiting measure in the 1850s, for which he filed a patent that was granted in 1857. PMG mentions a tape repair on the back of this note which does not overly distract. Excessively rare with only around two or three examples known to us at present.
