Description

Hartford, CT- Merchants and Manufacturers Bank $1 Feb. 1, 1862 G2b PMG Very Good 10.
The bank was organized in 1857 and remained in business until becoming the First National Bank of Hartford (Ch. 121). The national bank began life in the same building occupied by the Merchants and Manufacturers Bank and was prepared to redeem any of the earlier bank's notes presented for redemption. The design was produced by National Bank Note Company and features a vignette of a sheep with two lambs entitled The Twins based on the work of Landseer as well as one of a young woman holding flowers. A large green 1 protector completes the design. While the note has seen time in circulation, it is completely intact, repair-free, and uncancelled.
