Description

Omaha City, NE (Territory)- Bank of Nebraska $1 18__ as G4 Proof PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 64 PPQ.
The bank opened for business around June 18, 1856, boasting, among other things, a 7,500 pound safe that had to be hauled by eleven yoke of oxen when it was delivered. The bank ran into difficulties and suspended during the course of December 1859-January 1860. When the bank's only assets were sold in a sheriff's sale in November 1860, the bank's pride and joy, its 7,500 pound safe, brought $360 or 4.8ยข per pound. The $1 design from the bank's second series features an highly allegorical vignette titled Morning depicting a bare breasted maiden floating high above a distant city below and a farm in the distance at left, a small vignette of Ceres at top center, and a portrait of Webster at lower right. The note is printed on India paper mounted on card stock with four POCs in the signature lines. There were five examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale that likely make up the surviving population of this note in Proof form.
