Description

Nantucket, MA- Phoenix Bank $2 18__ G16 Remainder PCGS Banknote About Unc 55.
The bank was chartered in June 1812 and remained in business until circa 1837. By 1841-42, the bank's notes were listed as worthless indicating that it did not end well. The exact timeline is blurred due to the existence of another Phoenix Bank in Charlestown which was also in operation during the same time period, leading to confusion in some newspaper accounts. This note is of the classic PSSP (Patent Stereotype Steel Plate) design and layout, long preferred and, during certain periods, even mandated for use by New England banks. This design remained in wide spread use for over three decades between the early 1800s and mid-1830s, with some holdouts using it even longer. PCGS Banknote mentions "as-made" paper wrinkling, often present on notes due to the nature of the printing process.
