Description

Paris, (ME)- Town of Paris $5; $10; $25 (5); $29.25; $35 Aug.-Sep., 1864 Fine or Better.
These notes come from a town meeting to issue scrip for the citizens to raise $15,000, with each purchaser of a share earning six per cent interest (interest recorded on the back of the sheets). The money was meant to clear the town of the draft, something an individual, family, or even town could do in order so they do not send their young men to war. An interesting municipal scrip note duo where the notes are printed on the same sheet as the act that authorized the issuance of the scrip issue. Overall dimensions are approximately 7.75 by 10 inches. A blind embossing is observed in the upper left corner and each note has a 5ยข revenue stamp affixed to it. Each note has been both pen cancelled and rubberstamped cancelled. The issue in this lot is not listed in Maine Obsolete Paper Money and Scrip by George W. Wait. Some of the shares have one POC, staining and foxing. (Total: 9 items)
