Description

Albany, NY- First Great Western Turnpike Road Co. 5¢ Nov. 1, 1862 Harris H276 Fine-Very Fine;
Gloversville, NY- McNab Heacock & Co. at Fulton County Bank 5¢ Oct. 7, 1862 Harris H4 Fine-Very Fine.
There were five Great Western Turnpike Roads that were east-west toll roads constructed across the state of New York. The First Great Western Turnpike Road ran from Albany to Cherry Valley, a distance of some 58 miles. The fully issued note served as a toll ticket and was redeemable in Albany.
The firm of McNab, Heacock & Co was engaged in the manufacture of mittens and gloves according to an 1860 Federal Census schedule, not surprising since Gloversville was the epicenter of the production of these items as well as other leather goods for over a century. McNab later served as President of the National Fulton County Bank of Gloversville, the successor of the Fulton County Bank where this note was payable. The note, whose references to its denomination are printed in red, features a simple vignette of a Native American shooting an arrow at a deer at left. this note is fully issued and repair-free with some minimal toning on the back, perhaps from previous mounting.
Both notes are very scarce and seldom offered. (Total: 2 notes)
