Description

Charleston, SC- Bank of the State of South Carolina $1; $2 1861-62 Fine; Very Fine-Extremely Fine.
It is likely that the $1 note was printed from plates in inventory at the bank that were pressed into service with the payee name (Stephen Elliott, first president of the bank, who had been dead for over thirty years when this note was issued) and place of issue (Charleston) engraved. The note, which bears serial number 80, is hammer-canceled and has the post-war Dabney, Morgan & Co. stamp on the back tying this note to litigation surrounding the bank's ability to declare bankruptcy and its associated asset payout protocols.
The $2 note is similarly canceled but has no post-war stamp. It depicts the "new" state capitol in Columbia that was damaged when Columbia fell to Union forces near the end of the Civil War. (Total: 2 notes)
