Description

Savannah, GA- Bank of the State of Georgia 5¢; 25¢ Dec. 10, 1861 Fine-Very Fine; Crisp Uncirculated;
Savannah, GA- Bank of the State of Georgia, Athens Branch $20 Nov. 11, 1856 Fine;
Savannah, GA- Bank of the State of Georgia, Augusta Branch $20 Jan. 16, 1857 Fine-Very Fine.
The bank was organized in 1815 and remained in business through the Civil War. It did not survive the end of the war by more than a year, finally closing its doors during May-June, 1866 when it entered receivership. The Augusta note bears a rubberstamp indicating that it was redeemed for 25% of its face value in gold. It is unclear whether this was done during the closing days of the Civil War prior to the bank's closing or after the war as part of the liquidation process. All four notes are fully issued and repair-free.
