Description

San Diego, CA- San Diego and Phoenix Railroad Company $1 (1 Share) Nov. 1, 1893 UNL PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
This $1 share certificate is a great piece of California and numismatic history. The San Diego and Phoenix Railroad Company had been incorporated in 1893 initially to build a rail line between San Diego and Yuma, AZ. Due to the financial stresses created by the Panic of 1893, the line was never finished. That task was left to others in the future. Thomas A. Scott, whose portrait appears on the face of the certificate, was one of the leading railroad promoters in the country in the 1870s and was quite interested in a southwestern rail link between Texas and California. Scott died in 1881, however, and had no connection with this company. The back of this black and green certificate has vignettes of a steam locomotive and an aerial view of San Diego, portrayed as the "coming metropolis of the southwest." Quite rare and seldom seen. We are aware of four examples at present; two with red serial numbers and two with blue serial numbers.
