M. Mayers & Bro. was a retail druggist and general merchandise business operating out of Fort Smith (City), AR beginning in the 1840s. During the Civil War, it formed a business relationship with five other merchants including Alexander & Allen, Sherman, TX, and J.M. Smoot, Denton Texas which stood ready to redeem these notes that were redeemable in merchandise or current bank notes when presented in sums of $5. This 25¢ note was the smallest denomination issued from a large and involved series of notes in 1861-62. While this note was redeemable at all six participating merchants, Stirman & Dickson of Fayetteville, AR may have been the lead redemption location, as its name was featured in the left end panel. No repairs or meaningful condition shortcomings are mentioned by PMG.
