Description
St. Stephens, AL- Tombeckbe Bank $10 18__ G10 Gunther-Derby AO-438-$10a Rosene 306-3 Remainder PMG Very Fine 20.The Tombeckbe Bank was chartered in February 1818 and opened for business a few months later, on September 12. The institution's first president, Israel Pickens, would later become the third governor of Alabama from 1821-25 and also be instrumental in the establishment of the Bank of the State of Alabama. On June 8, 1827, the bank suspended its specie payments, and in November 1828, it officially failed. This design was known to Haxby only in Proof form, and our current offering likely represents the surviving population of examples of this variation in non-Proof form. This Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. production features a depiction of an allegorical female gesturing to a river and busy town at center. We have offered just one example of this design and denomination previously - this exact piece which realized $960 in August 2024.
Estimate: $900 - up.
