Description

Mobile, AL- Savage & Mathews 5¢ Sep. 1862 Gunther-Derby AO-333-$.05b Rosene 210-1 PMG Very Fine 25.
Savage & Mathews was a commission merchant firm, with business interests in several cities across Alabama and Mississippi circa 1862-64 (Savage was partnered with J.J. Melton in a commission merchant business in December 1864). The note design, which is standard for all denominations, has a simple denominational end panel at right and a red back design designating in which cities notes could be redeemed. Minor varieties exist with either one or two signature lines on the face. PMG notes that this note has evidence of previous mounting. We are aware of two examples of this note at present.
