Description

Claiborne, AL- Post Office / Postmaster 6-1/4¢ ND (ca. 1830s-50s) Gunther-Derby AO-150-$.0625a Rosene 42-1 Remainder PCGS Banknote Choice Fine 15 Details.
Although a ghost town today, Claiborne was a thriving community from the 1820s through the end of the Civil War. Your cataloger believes, based on the denomination and style of the note, that this was probably issued during the Panic of 1837 era. With simple borders being its only ornamentation, the note was payable in current money or specie and was receivable at the post office (presumably for postage). The left end of this example is missing (the missing portion is identical to the right end) as well as a missing lower right corner outside of any printed portions of the design. We are aware of two or possibly three surviving examples of this note at present.
