Description
Blountsville, AL- J.M. Chamblee 50¢ Aug. 22, 1862 Gunther-Derby AO-119-$.50a Rosene 21-1 PMG Choice Fine 15.The note in this lot was likely issued by J(ames) M. Chamblee, who was born in 1823 and lived in the Blountsville area until his death in 1895. Beyond these details, records of his business dealings and life are nonexistent. Our current offering was redeemable in Confederate Treasury Notes in sums of ten dollars. We have only auctioned a piece from this issuer once prior to now, this exact note which realized $220 in September 2001. The only listed denomination in both the Gunther-Derby and Rosene references is represented by this 50¢ example. In fact, our current offering is likely the only note known from this enigmatic individual. It served as the plate note on page 53 of the Gunther-Derby tome. PMG mentions a tape repair at lower right on the back as well as several pinholes concentrated towards the upper left of the note.
