Description

Blackwater, AL- J.B. Ferguson 10¢ Sep. 20, 1862 Gunther-Derby AO-116-$.10a Rosene 18-1 PMG Very Fine 20.
While there is no shortage of Fergusons in the vicinity of Blackwater, there are no good matches for a J.B. Ferguson and so for the time being we will have to assume that Ferguson was a local merchant who issued scrip as a means of making change during the Civil War. The note is sharply printed in dark blue ink with a small eagle vignette flanked by a 10 to each side. The note was payable in current funds when presented in sums of $5. This note served as the plate note in both Alabama state catalogs and is likely unique or nearly so.
From The Jerry Loegler Collection

Estimate: $300 - up.
