Description
Bellefonte, AL- Grayson & Power 10¢ Dec. 21, 1861 (?) Gunther-Derby AO-113-UNL PMG Very Good 10 Net.Bellefonte is now a ghost town in Jackson County. Incorporated in 1821, it served as the county seat of Jackson County from 1821 until 1868. It was abandoned in the 1920s. According to the 1860 Federal census, Lemuel Grayson was a 21 year-old shopkeeper living in the same household as an older merchant, John Patton. Your cataloger surmises that Grayson set out on his own with partner James Nathan Power, listed in census reports as a grocer, by late 1861. Based on the note's text, the firm sold groceries (and likely other mercantile merchandise). The note was "good for TEN CENTS in any kind of groceries or redeemable in currency when the sum of two dollars are presented." The existence of another note, clearly from this series, signed by A. Reynolds who is also listed as a shopkeeper in the 1860 census (ironically on the very next line of the 1860 census form in which Grayson appears) puts into question how this scrip was utilized by local merchants. It appears that at least these two merchants utilized a common series of notes rather than having the expense of printing more individualized scrip. Further research is needed to sort this out. PMG mentions that the note has been severed and reattached with tape. While Gunther and Derby list a 10¢ note, it is of a slightly different style. This note is in the style of their listed 5¢ note. Unlisted and quite possibly unique.
