Description

Bellefonte, AL- A. Reynolds 20¢ Mar. 13, 1862 Gunther-Derby UNL Rosene UNL PMG Fine 12 Net.
Alexander Reynolds is listed as a shopkeeper in the 1860 federal census for Bellefonte. This note indicates that it is payable in groceries or currency and seems to be from the same series as the previously listed Grayson & Power note in this auction. Apparently both merchants decided to use a common series of scrip notes as it is in the same form as the 10¢ note issued by Grayson & Power as illustrated in the Gunther-Derby catalog. Reynolds later went on to be a retail grocer in Chattanooga in the 1880s suggesting that both firms were, in fact, in the grocery business. Additional research is needed to clarify the details of this arrangement if, in fact, there was one. The note has been dismounted from black scrapbook paper, leaving a number of page remnants behind. The note also has split/tear repairs. At present, this note is believed to be unique.
