Description

Auburn, AL- East Alabama Insurance Company 75¢ Feb. 1862 Gunther-Derby AO-111-$.75a Rosene 15-6 PMG Choice Fine 15.
Incorporated on December 9, 1861, the East Alabama Insurance Company was located in Auburn, AL, home to Auburn University. This 75¢ showcases both a low serial number 4 at lower left and a large steam locomotive rumbling down the train tracks at center. We first offered this representative, which served as the plate note on page 50 of the Gunther-Derby reference, in January 2004. Since then, we auctioned another example in May 2023. That piece, which PMG graded Fine 12 Net with repairs, realized $288. The note in this lot displays evidence of a prior mounting as well as a tear at lower right.
From The Jerry Loegler Collection

Estimate: $275 - up.
