Description

Excessively Rare Torrington, Wyoming Note
First Public Offering Since 2006

Torrington, WY - 1902 $10 Date Back Fr. 618 The First National Bank of Torrington Ch. #(W)9289 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
A wonderful Wyoming rarity, this is just the third note to be reported from this obscure one-bank location and the first piece to appear at public sale since the dispersal of The Peter Huntoon Collection in 2006. Torrington is the county seat of Goshen County in southeastern Wyoming and was the host to just one note-issuing bank, the First National. In business from 1908 until its failure just before Christmas in 1924, this institution issued 1,152 sheets of Date Backs and Plain Backs. At the time the receiver closed the doors, it had just $6,100 outstanding. Prior to this evening, only two notes were in the census for this issuer, a $10 Plain Back that was sold in 2006 and a $20 Plain Back that has never appeared at public sale. This offering, therefore, becomes the first Date Back reported from this charter. It is a very pretty, pen signed $10 with bold ink colors. This "A" position note retains its top selvage. Included in the selvage is a handwritten date of "12-23-1913." likely added by the bank's Vice-President who has signed this note and kept it as a treasured souvenir. The Huntoon note fetched almost $40,000 in the exuberant market of 2006 and, while we do not expect that realization tonight, this Wyoming rarity should still generate plenty of bidding interest.
