Description

Unique Colfax, Washington Territory Brown Back - Ex: Amon Carter

Colfax, Washington Territory - 1882 $10 Brown Back Fr. 480 The First National Bank of Colfax Ch. #3076 PMG Very Fine 25.
A wonderful note that certainly is one of the major highlights of tonight's auction, it is one of just thirteen Territorial notes reported from all Washington banks, according to the National Currency Foundation census and it is also the only known Territorial example extant from this short-lived issuer that was only in business from 1883 to 1905. It traces its provenance to the fabled Amon Carter collection and made its first public appearance in the 1986 Hickman-Oakes Memphis sale. A true miracle of survival, this $10 came from a Territorial issue of a mere 830 sheets. This offering is a crisp mid-grade example with great color, and sharp pen signatures, and nice eye appeal for its assigned grade. It broke the six-figure mark in its last public appearance in a 2018 auction, and considering the desirability of rare Territorials in today's market, this Washington trophy note should certainly approach that level again tonight.
