Description
Excessively Rare Virginia 1902 $100 Date Back - One of Two Reported
Staunton, VA - $100 1902 Date Back Fr. 697 The Augusta National
Bank Ch. # (S)2269 PMG Very Fine 30.This is a very attractive example of a downright rare type and denomination for the Old Dominion as it is one of just two $100 Date Backs reported for the entire state. Series 1902 $100 Date Backs were issued by just two banks in the state (while none issued $100 Plain Backs). To date, just one note is reported from each bank. However, the one known note from a Petersburg bank has never appeared at public sale, while this piece from Staunton, which is pedigreed to Barney Bluestone's sale of the Grinnell collection in 1945, is making its first public appearance since a 1996 auction. It is a bright and crisp note with bold ink colors and dark printed signatures. Its only flaw is a small edge tear which truly affects nothing.
