Serial Number 1 Esmont, VA - $5 1902 Red Seal Fr. 588 The Esmont
National Bank Ch. # (S)8003 PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.Earlier this year, we were pleased to offer a Serial Number 1 Red Seal from this rare Albemarle County bank that, at that time, became only the fifth Number 1 Red Seal reported from any Virginia bank. Housed in a PMG Very Fine 30 holder, it fetched a solid price of $20,400. That strong realization has brought another Serial Number 1 Red Seal from this charter, quite literally, "out of the woodwork." This is the "C" position note from the first sheet of $5s issued by this bank, as opposed to the "A" position $5 that we auctioned in January. However, it is much higher in grade, unlike its counterpart, and it is a pen-signed beauty with great color and nary a hint of any fold or handling. Its only flaw is a very tiny rust spot near top center which truly affects nothing. This is a great note from the Old Dominion State.
