Rare Mexia $5 Brown Back - One of Two Notes Reported
Mexia, TX - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 477 The Citizens National
Bank Ch. # 5697 PMG Very Fine 20.This is a great rarity from a very short-lived Limestone County bank that issued only Brown Backs during its brief two-year existence from 1901 until 1903. Just two notes are reported, both $5s, including this offering which is the finer of the pair and which made its last public appearance in the sale of The J. L. Irish Collection in 1997. It is a pleasing mid-grade piece with very nice color and bold pen signatures. With just $545 outstanding in 1910, it is not likely that many more notes will surface from this rare charter.
