First Publicly Offered Example

Wessington, SD - $10 1902 Plain Back Fr. 626 The First National Bank Ch. # (W)8325 PMG Very Fine 20.
A great South Dakota rarity, this is the first note to ever be publicly offered from this flyspeck of a community in Beadle County. During its heyday, Wessington had a population of several hundred but it has since dwindled to a mere 170 today. The First National was this hamlet's sole issuer and operated from 1906 until it closed during the agricultural depression of the 1920s. This is a pleasing, evenly circulated Plain Back with good color and the bold pen signatures of the bank's assistant cashier and vice-president. It provides a great opportunity for a South Dakota specialist to add a new bank and town to their holdings.
