Description

Scarce Westerly First Charter $5

Westerly, RI - $5 Original Fr. 397a The National Phenix Bank Ch. # 1169 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
Out of the very small population of notes reported on this Washington County bank, there should be no debate that this well-preserved Original $5 is the finest of the seven examples known. The sole reported First Charter $5 on this sought-after bank, this lovely Rhode Island National displays wonderful color, bright paper, and bold signatures. Those hand-signed signatures are those of Cashier Ethan Foster and President Edwin Babcock, who served together as a pair from 1872 until the bank closed their doors in 1901. It has been over a decade since an example from CH# 1169 has crossed the auction block, and now Rhode Island enthusiasts will have the long awaited opportunity to add one to their collection.
