Description

First $2 Offering in Over Two Decades

Westerly, RI - $2 1875 Fr. 392 The Washington National Bank Ch. # 952 PMG Very Fine 25.
An important Westerly Deuce that has been tucked away since it last crossed the auction block over twenty years ago, and is now ready to find a home in the next advanced collection. The second of Westerly's three issuing national banks to be chartered, which came in March 1865, only 1,000 1875 $2's were issued for this Washington County bank. With that small number, it is a miracle that this note survived the jaws of redemption. The National Bank Note census shows only two $2s reported for this bank, however the other example has never crossed the auction block. The hand-signed signatures of Cashier Charles Perry and President Nathan Fellows Dixon III paired alongside the bright colors, white paper, and bold ink make for a stunning Rhode Island Deuce. PMG has noted repairs, however they were professionally done and take nothing away from the significance and appeal of this great note.
