Description
Providence, RI - $5 1875 Fr. 401 The National Exchange Bank Ch. # 1339 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.An attractive 1875 $5 from this large-only Providence bank, this piece shows little evidence of circulation until closely examined. It is boldly printed with bright paper and dark pen signatures. Additionally, this note is from a reentered plate. This is signified by the tiny star to the immediate left of the plate letter "B" at upper left. Between 1878-96 the BEP added a tiny star next to the upper plate position letter on the subjects on plates that have been reentered. Reentry is the process where design components are repressed into the plate from a roll in order to refurbish worn engraved details. While, this work was being performed, it was common for the BEP to alter the plates. This could include updating Treasury signatures or replacing a bank note company's imprint with the BEP's imprint. The Chief of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing sent notices to the Comptroller of the Currency listing that 142 plates had been reentered and starred between 1878-96. Reentering plates saved money. The BEP charged banks $100 for the cost of a new four-subject plate, while cost for a reentered plate cost the bank $25.
Reentering plates saved money. Much more can be learned from the article at www.spmc.org - "Stars On Reentered Series of 1875 and 1882 National Bank Note Plates" in Paper Money Society of Paper Money Collectors, May/June 1982, Vol. XXXI, No. 3, Whole No. 159, pages 77-88.
