Description

Appealing Providence First Charter Ace

Providence, RI - $1 Original Fr. 380a The Merchants National Bank Ch. # 1131 PMG About Uncirculated 55.
The city of Providence was home to nearly half of Rhode Islands issuing National Banks, with The Merchants National Bank being among the first dozen Providence charters. This stunning Ace has staying in a wonderful state of preservation, earning a PMG About Uncirculated 55 grade. Only 2,000 sheets of $1-$1-$1-$2 Originals were issued, and this example is just one of half a dozen $1s known today. Bright paper and great color paired with the lovely hand-penned signatures of Cashier John W. Vernon and President Royal C. Taft (who was a cousin of 27th President of the United States, William Howard Taft) makes for an eye appealing Rhode Island National. A minor repair is noted by PMG, however it was professionally executed and takes nothing away from this Providence Ace.
