Description
One of Two Known Pennsylvania Original Series $50s
Pottsville, PA - $50 Original Fr. 442a The Government National
Bank Ch. # 1152 PMG Very Fine 25.A great National Bank Note rarity, this is one of just 35 Original Series $50s listed in the National Currency Foundation census. However, of that number, five are from California National Gold Banks, three others are in institutional collections, and one example from a New York City bank is a well known counterfeit. This offering in one of just two pieces reported from banks in Pennsylvania, the other being from a Pittsburgh charter. Last on the market in a 2012 auction where it brought over $50,000, this note is very attractive for the grade with excellent color on both face and back, bold pen signatures, and solid margins all around. PMG has mentioned closed pinholes which is a mere trifle when considering the rarity and desirability of this piece. This is an outstanding mid-grade example of this very rare type and denomination.
