Description

Rare Oregon $5 Brown Back - Finest of Three Reported for this Bank

Portland, OR - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 469 The Ainsworth National Bank Ch. # 3402 PCGS Banknote About Unc 53 PPQ.
A quite lovely example of a very tough Oregon note that represents not only an excessively rare Portland bank, but also an extremely scarce type and denomination for the state. The Ainsworth NB was a Brown Back only charter that was in business for a mere 17 years before closing in 1902. This piece is one of just three notes reported from here and one of just a dozen $5 Brown Backs known for the entire state, according to the National Currency Foundation census. Of the other two notes known on this bank, one is a rather rough Good while the second is a sheet-mate to this offering and was called a raw Very Fine in its lone public appearance in a 2006 auction. This beautiful note was last on the market in a 2009 auction, and it is a bright, well printed, and boldly signed example that retains its top selvedge and exhibits just minor traces of handling. This is a true Oregon trophy note that is worth whatever it takes to bring it home tonight.
