Excessively Rare Original Series First Charter $100

Cincinnati, OH - $100 Original Fr. 452 The First NB Ch. # 24
With the advent of the modern National Bank Note census, originally started by John Hickman and later kept up to date by Don Kelly and Andrew Shiva, long held beliefs about the rarity of certain types have either been confirmed or disproved. One fact has become clear, with the most up to date census demonstrating the true rarity of First Charter fifties and hundreds. A mere 34 Original Series hundreds (not counting the seven reported $100 National Gold Bank Notes) comprise the entire census from all states and banks combined, with 3 of that number confined to institutional collections. This piece bears the additional distinction of being the only $100 Original Series example known on any of the First 100 Charter banks. As recognition of the rarity of these high denomination First Charters has spread, prices have adjusted substantially in recent years, with auction realizations now rapidly advancing into the middle and upper five figures for any acceptable specimen. Despite the unexplained Net grade from PMG, this piece is an evenly circulated specimen which appears perfect for the grade, with excellent colors and signatures. PMG does list its illustrious pedigree on the reverse, however with this note tracing its lineage to the famed Grinnell holdings, and then to Amon Carter, Jr. and Don C. Kelly. Choice Fine 15 Net.
