Description

Serial Number 1 Vernon Brown Back

Serial Number 1 Vernon, NY - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 468 The National Bank of Vernon Ch. # 1264 PMG Extremely Fine 40.
A lovely serial number 1 example with an illustrious pedigree that can be traced back to lot 1609 of the fabled Grinnell sale of June 16, 1945 when it realized the impressive (for then) total of $22.50. It was obtained by pioneer collector George Blake, then to William P. Donlon, and was obtained by Dick Boyce as lot number 493 in Donlon's sale of his Research & Personal Collection in May of 1971. It's a beautifully pen signed note which displays only the barest trace of any real circulation, although there is one small tear which affects little. According to the census, it is the only serial number 1 example of any kind, large or small, known from this one bank community.
From the New York National Bank Note Collection of Richard L. Boyce
